Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions and answers

What is your business writing background?

I’ve loved to write for as long as I can remember. I studied history in college, in large part because I love to research and write about history. After college, I got a job as a technical writer. I spent years learning how to write technical documentation about things like architecture, engineering, construction, telecommunications, software design, and lots more. I learned new things every chance I got, and I soon learned how to write and design marketing materials and websites. I also branched out into writing for magazines as a freelancer. After working for big companies for several years, I struck out on my own and wrote for magazines, small business, and nonprofits. Along the way, I’ve written and designed brochures, press releases, white papers, nonfiction books, annual reports, and pretty much every kind of business material that exists.

What courses do you offer?

I am preparing to launch a variety of courses about business writing.

Is business writing really a good career choice?

I think so! It’s been great for me for over 20 years. During that time, I’ve worked for large software companies, small start-ups, nonprofits, and government contractors. Every single industry needs writers for creating content. Smart business owners know that having business writers on staff helps create more professional materials and a professional image. If you are willing to learn additional skills, like website design, simple layout, and editing, you’ll be a great catch for businesses and nonprofits. In addition, writing jobs are especially well suited to remote work because you can write from anywhere.

Do you offer any one-to-one coaching?

Yes! If you’re thinking about starting a career in business writing, or maybe thinking about changing careers, I can help you sift through the different options that might best fit your skills and interests. I can give you tips on creating great portfolio content and how to position yourself to get a writing job. Contact me to set up a free chat to see if we’d be a good fit for coaching.
